Block Printed Wall Hanging ~ Diagonal Yellow Dots

£120.00

Block printed, organic cotton wall hangings with wooden dowel made by Emily Fairlie Baker at Market Place Print Studio, Cockermouth.

The Design

Emily makes small batches of textiles each season. Here we have one of seven wall hangings with diagonal yellow dots and green stripes. The patterns are delicate and lightly textured where ink has been applied. Expect subtle colour differences when placed in different shades of light in your home.

Colours may vary ever so slightly from the photographs, we suggest seeing them in person before buying in the studio if you can. Imperfections from hand printing are a beautiful and expected part of block printing ~ we hope you enjoy the beauty of this as much as we do.

The hangings have been sewn by Emily with a top and bottom looped hem. 2 pieces of wooden dowel are included with your wall hanging so you can hang it straight away.

The wall hanging measures 178 × 56 cm.

The Process

Each stamp block has been carved by Emily from her own designs inspired by traditional Indian Block Printing or the nature in the surrounding Lake District countryside. Each block is inked up with soil association certified inks and then stamped onto the fabric by hand.

The Fabric

This beautiful cotton is sourced with care from Sunbird Organics, an environmentally friendly textiles business working with rural artisans and hand-weavers in India. The fabrics are naturally dyed using different dye stuffs such as indigo, pomegranate and madder root. Natural dyeing is an important part of Emily’s artistic process and is a big reason why she chose Sunbird textiles as her base fabric for the wall hangings.

The fabric is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic cotton with “extra long staple fibres from India's heritage cotton SUVIN variety and combed for extra softness.” Read more about the fabric on Sunbird’s website here.

Care instructions

When you take your wall hanging home it may have creases from where it has been carefully packaged. We suggest giving it a nice, slow iron. This will not only improve the appearance of the fabric but will also further set the inks. The inks have been set with an iron by Emily but we’d advise you to iron them again on the hottest cotton setting directly on top of the stamped side to increase light and wash fastness. If you ever need to wash your hanging we suggest hand washing or washing on cold/maximum 30° degrees using a PH neutral detergent (gentle eco friendly detergents are good such as Ecover).
