Practical Art: Understanding your Paints - Wednesday 10th September 2025
Evening Course, Wednesday 10th September, 18:00-19:30, £15
In this session of the Practical Art Series we will be talking about paints. How to read your paint tube label (what does the paint series mean? What does the little square box mean?), how to use a colour wheel, difference between transparency and opacity of certain paints and more This is the second of 4 sessions exploring practical skills for creatives. Each session costs slightly different prices but you can book all 4 here for a £10 discount.
Practical Art is a series of evening demos and talks where we will be sharing practical skills for creatives. The series programme is as follows:
Weds 3rd Sept- Stretching a Canvas. A demo of how to stretch and prime a canvas. You will stretch your own small canvas to take home with you - £25
Weds 10th Sept- Understanding your Paints. A talk looking at the very basics of paints including how to read your paint tube label (what does the paint series mean? What does the little square box mean?), how to use a colour wheel, difference between transparency and opacity of certain paints and more - £15
Weds 17th Sept- Egg Tempera Painting. A demo and practical experimentation of how to make egg tempera paints using egg yolk and pigment. Will touch on how to gesso a board using rabbit skin glue. One of the oldest forms of painting too so also doubles as a practical art history session - £20
Weds 24th Sept- Intro to Natural Dying. A talk and demo of the basics of natural dying vegetable fibres exploring the different processes such as scouring, mordanting, modifying - £15

Please note: The print studio has limited access and etching involves using hazardous chemicals. The print room environment is not suitable for everyone. Etching classes are unsuitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, those sensitive to chemicals or with breathing difficulties. Contact us if you need more information about the chemicals we use as part of the printing process.
