open art ~ a circle for exploring self doubt and perfectionism
Tuesday 19th August 6-8pm, £8, all are welcome
Join Milly and Emily at Market Place Print Studio for the open art circle - a guided space for exploring self-doubt and perfectionism in art. Creativity is within all of us, but we often feel held back by our own judgements and a need to make something “perfect”. Sometimes we don’t even try because we are afraid of failing.
What is open art?
open art offers a space for creativity without judgement. To explore our self-doubt with kindness and curiosity; to embrace it as part of the process. To allow ourselves to make imperfect art.
During open art circles we will ground with simple mindfulness practices and follow a range of activities to explore our creativity and any barriers to it. During the circles we may ponder a piece of poetry or text to start a discussion on themes such as self-doubt, perfectionism, creativity and inspiration. There will plenty of space to share your thoughts and feelings about whatever is coming up for you in relation to your creativity, but never any expectation to share if you don’t want to.
If you would rather bring and focus on your own projects instead of following the activities we prepare, we wholeheartedly welcome you to. There are no rules…only the invitation to come as you are.
What are the values of open art?
Through the gentle structure of mindfulness and creative prompts, open art aims to foster a collaborative and compassionate space where no one person is “teacher”, instead we learn from each other through listening and sharing. That said, there is no pressure to share deeply or at all ~ all those in circle will have choice over how they participate and are encourage to feel into their own sense of agency. Milly and Emily’s hope is that open art will be attended by regular members who help shape the circle and its values.
What you could bring with you
Some artwork your working on or an idea of something you’d like to work on - if you feel you want to, you can share this with the group and speak about anything you’re finding tricky about the idea/piece of art.
Inspirations - bring along your sketchbook or any inspirations. Even if we don’t share these or speak about them, you never know what conversations may spark an idea and it’s nice to keep your inspirations close to you.
Materials - We will provide materials for the creative activities, but please feel welcome to bring any materials you love to use from home.
Snacks + drinks - Feel free to bring snacks and drinks with you - we’ll also provide some hot drinks.
About Emily and Milly
“Hello, I’m Emily and I am co-founder of Market Place Print Studio. My creative practice involves naturally dyeing fabrics and block printing. The creative challenges I’m facing right now are prioritising the time to create artworks just for me and getting stuck on ideas before I’ve even begun making. I hope you will join Milly and I at the open art circles so we can explore our creative blocks together and alchemise challenges into insight and awareness” - Emily
“For me, creativity is in and expressed by all of us even down to the smallest choices we make on a daily basis. I think that as humans we seek and express our creativity all the time. The barriers to creativity are not out there somewhere, but within us; and can be navigated with curiosity and compassion. Time and time again I have returned to mindfulness as a guide to help me understand my own and other’s barriers. I love to lead mindfulness sessions and share a grounded space with others. I am by no means a ‘professional’, but I am human and that feels enough.” - Milly
