Etching Percy Kelly - 2 day course - Saturday 11th + 18th October 2025
2 Day Course, Saturday 11th + 18th October, 10:00-16:00, £150, All Levels
Over the two days we’ll take an in depth look at Percy Kelly’s printmaking practice. Taking inspiration from Kelly to create our own prints inspired by our local settings, whilst learning about the many techniques of intaglio printing including etching, engraving and drypoint. You will leave with an edition of the prints you have created.
Participants will gain an understanding of different printmaking techniques used by Kelly. This class may appeal to any fan of Kelly to understand how he created his works including art historians and artists alike.

Short tour of the studio,
Introductions and discuss the plan for the day, touching on the history of intaglio printing and Percy Kelly.
Talk over the process of getting the plate ready for etching and how printing an etching works.
11:00-12:00
Go outside and draw from Cockermouth town to use as a springboard for prints, visiting streets that Percy Kelly drew from.
12:00-13:00
Lunch
13.00 to 16.00
Preparing design and plates, drawing, developing ideas, exploring techniques

What to bring with you
Appropriate clothing- Wear clothes you don’t mind getting inky. A portion of the first day we will be outside drawing so dress appropriately for the weather.
Sketchbook and pencil- We will have materials but you may like to bring your own sketchbook and drawing materials to keep all your ideas in one place.
Ideas - You’re welcome to bring with you an image or art work you would like to use as inspiration or to transfer to your copper printing plate. If you don’t bring an idea or inspiration for your print don’t worry because we have lots of inspirational books and ideas we use as tools for developing an image. But as we have a lot to fit in on the day, it can help to bring along a pre conceived image to make into a print.
Packed lunch - Tea and coffee is provided. Bring your own packed lunch or eat at one of the independent local cafes and bakeries.
