Dandelion Hand Wall Hanging

£120.00

Block printed, organic cotton wall hangings made by Emily Fairlie Baker at Market Place Print Studio, Cockermouth. Wooden magnets for hanging included.

The Design

Emily makes small batches of textiles each season. Here we have Dandelion Hand, a piece inspired by foraging and picking plants for natural dyeing fabirc and to eat. The fabric has been naturally dyed with madder root before being block printed by hand with soil association certified inks.

Expect subtle colour differences when placed in different shades of light in your home. Colours may vary ever so slightly from the photographs, we suggest seeing them in person before buying in the studio if you can. Imperfections from hand printing are a beautiful and expected part of block printing ~ we hope you enjoy the beauty of this as much as we do.

The wall hanging measures approx 132cm x 23.5cm. Magnetic wooden strips are included to hang the wall hanging but you may prefer to hang a different way or to even frame this piece.

The Process

Each stamp block has been carved by Emily from her own designs inspired by traditional Indian Block Printing or the nature in the surrounding Lake District countryside. Each block is inked up with soil association certified inks and then stamped onto the fabric by hand. If you’d like to learn the process yourself, browse our workshops and choose any Block Printing session.

The Fabric

Emily sources fabric from the Organic Textile Company, Sunbird Organics or from local charity shops.

Care instructions

When you take your wall hanging home it may have creases from where it has been carefully packaged. We suggest giving it a nice, slow iron. This will not only improve the appearance of the fabric but will also further set the inks. The inks have been set with an iron by Emily but we’d advise you to iron them again on the hottest cotton setting directly on top of the stamped side to increase light and wash fastness. If you ever need to wash your hanging we suggest hand washing or washing on cold/maximum 30° degrees using a PH neutral detergent (gentle eco friendly detergents are good such as Miniml or Ecoleaf).
